93-year-old froze to death, owed big utility bill →
Here is one of those moral questions to ask high school students to ponder.  Is this man’s death his own, for ignoring his bills, his neighbor’s, for not checking up on him, his family’s, the government’s, for not creating a safety net or rules that would stop the power company from turning off the heat, or the power company’s?

This is a not-particularly-nice block of a nice neighborhood. At barely 2000 sq ft, with no garage, there is no way that a home in “as-is” condition on a noisy block should fetch an above 1 Mil asking price these days, even in the 94118.

Dear Jenny McCarthy: There is no such thing as recovery from autism. Your son simply learned how to adapt to his environment.  This is good, but your trumpeting that you’ve found a cure is very painful for the parents of autistic children who are not as high functioning, and very insulting for high functioning autistics who understand that there isn’t anything wrong with them, they...

Study: Women less able to suppress hunger than men →
Interesting study, not for the gender difference but for the evidence of what we already should know - for some people, “will power” is a completely different physical, real world experience than for others.  Yes, perhaps there is a skinny person who has more moral fortitude when it comes to self-denial than a fat one, but the  situation is just as likely to be reversed and we’d...

Sometimes I fear the hero worship’s gone a little too far - who can stand up to a song like this? I’ll be coming in late to the office on Tuesday though, since the kids have “teacher development day” off and I want to watch the swearing in with them.  Just to make sure it actually happens, really.  Living on the west coast, I’ll only be a half an hour or so off...

A village in peril in Alaska. →
Alaskan village didn’t get their food and fuel shipments due to early freeze this autum and weather that has only gotten worse.  As a result local fuel prices are in the 7-10 dollar a gallon range and many can not afford to both eat and keep warm. In these cases, usually the governer  declares a state of emergency, but so far, Ms. Palin has not dealt with this town’s crisis. Help if...
